COST OF CLOTH DIAPERS: Part II

Anyone wondering if cloth diapering really saves money?  I did!  Even though I'm a firm believer in cloth diapering, and as I said in a prior post, it is all we can afford, sometimes I wondered.  So, after over a month of researching and compiling I have results! The results include the cost of disposables, the cost of our current cloth diaper stash, estimated expenses until 18 months and the total savings!
STAY TUNED THIS WEEK FOR A THREE PART SERIES!

Part II: The Cost of Cloth Diaper Stash

We cloth diaper with prefolds and covers, other than Rita's one pocket diaper that we use at night, which is nearly the most frugal way to cloth diaper.  More extreme would be using birds-eye flats (which have to be prefolded) with covers.  I may have done this option, but did not stumble across it until Rita was about 11 months old and we were well settled in our prefold and cover routine.  We had some issues with her big people poop around 11 and 12 months but using a cloth wipe or doubler as a liner on top of the prefold makes changing and disposing of a poop a cinch!  I wish I would have known about this simple solution to clean-up before complaining!

Current Expenses:

Prefolds: $162
Two dozen “Seconds” Clotheez Newborn Organic Prefolds* (Green Mtn Diapers) $36
Three dozen “Seconds” Clotheez Small Organic Prefolds (Green Mtn Diapers) $57
Three dozen “Thirds” Clotheez Medium Unbleached Prefolds (Green Mtn Diapers) $69
I wasn’t able to get my invoice for the purchase of the medium size, but $23 per dozen seems a more than fair estimate esp. since these were thirds and NOT organic
Half a dozen large sized prefolds (hand me downs) $0
One dozen birds-eye flats diapers (gift from friends) $0
*Three dozen diapers allows me to wash every two days, but most of the time I wash every morning.

Workhorse Diapers: $0
Three Medium Workhorse Snap Diapers (gift from Green Mtn Diapers) $0
One Medium Workhorse Diaper (gift from Green Mtn Diapers) $0
Three Large Workhorse Snap Diapers (gift from Green Mtn Diapers) $0
*These workhorse are lagniappe - we don’t depend on them.

Two Kushies Swim Diapers (Amazon) $26.12

One Medium gDiaper cover with liner (Wal-Mart gift card) $0
One "Small" Disana Wool Diaper Cover size 62-68  (Green Mtn Diapers) $27.00
*Since my post on cloth diapering we have tried the "flip" diaper covers and much prefer them over all of the above listed.  If we had bought six flip covers at $13.95 each from Sweet Bottoms we could have saved a bunch on diaper covers!  Our cost would have been $83.70 instead of 126.01(savings of $42.31) and Sweet Bottoms offers free shipping! I learned about one size diaper covers after buying covers for the first six months of diapering Rita - whoops.

Wipes: $0

One dozen Fuzzi Bunz double sided flannel wipes (Babies R Us giftcard) $0

Three empty spray bottles $3.00
Two bottles Kissaluvs Diaper Lotion Potion Concentrate (Green Mtn Diapers) $29.90
(I really only ordered one bottle but desperately needed a second by nine months)
Four bottles of witchhazel (over 12 months, Target) $12.00
Two Munchkin Wet Goods Bags (Target) $20.00

I didn’t keep receipts from stores, so I'll tack on $25.00 for shipping and tax, which may not be included for some items listed above.

Total Expense for 12 months cloth diapering: $436.16
-----------------------------------------
Projected Expenses 12-18 months:

Two bottles of witchhazel (Target) $6.00

This sounds way better than spending over $1,000.00 on something that would leech chemicals into our babies, have to be thrown away (while smelling terrible) and harm the environment with for the sake of convenience!
